Calming the Restless Mind

Your mind may be overloaded with conflicting thoughts and decisions today, which may make you feel restless both mentally and physically. Thinking about too many things at one time might be due to your feeling overwhelmed by the choices available to you and the difficulty you have in settling on one idea. Bringing your mind back to one point of focus could help you ease some of the agitation you feel and make it easier for you to concentrate. Should you feel fidgety today, you can repeat a mantra for several minutes in order to give your mind something tangible to hold onto. You might create your own mantra, or you could use something such as the universal Sanskrit sound, “Om.” As you repeat your sound, allow yourself to feel the vibration of the words move throughout your body. By concentrating on these sounds and feelings, you may notice that your mind and body become calmer.

Mantras are powerful tools we can use to quiet the mind and gain a sense of peaceful well-being. It is natural for our minds to hop from thought to thought as if it were a monkey jumping from tree to tree. Having something specific and repetitious to focus on, such as a word or phrase, however, helps us tame our “monkey minds.” Once you calm your mind today, your body and emotions will settle down into a state of relaxation, making it much easier to carry out the decisions you need to make in your life.
